The name of the spot is Sarobetsu moor in Horonobe city.
This unexplored town is one of the best snowkiting spot in Japan. As you see the google map, super large flat powder snow field more than 1.5 square mile. The snow quality is almost perfect for snowkiting (10cm-15cm deep dry powder snow on the harder ice snow)
The wind condition is always steady because there is nothing block from ocean and straight to land.
The local people told me the good snow season is Dec-Mar and everyday windy.
I saw a lot of wind turbines and a long wind guard on streets.
The closest airport will be Wakkanai airport and it takes around 50min drive.
The second choice to get there is 5h-6h drive from Shin-Chitose airport.
It is a small town with few sightseeing and events in the winter time. Accommodation is also limited. I stayed at Motel called Hokuto-sou.
The better room cost 7500yen/Person. Cheaper room (no toilet no shower) cost 5000yen.
The another snowkite spot is Reindeer Ranch (if you are lucky you can buy reindeer sausages). This spot is located at just in front of this town's only tourist attraction.
(You can do feeding for reindeer)
I had ride at this spot when the wind is too strong at Sarobetsu moor.
The wind was gusty sometime but it is fun to ride at this large undulation hill. The snow quality was the same as Sarobetsu moor and it is 2 times deeper.
Jump higher and fail down but never hurts.
Unfortunately there is no kite shop or local team in this area, so you need to bring your all gears. Every year Xfly and White isle open a contest in Feb. I’ll definitely join every year.
It was very nice to know this area, hope this town becomes “Japanese Ragnarok”
